In an attempt to appeal to the human sense of attraction, as well as the other five senses, Avon released a new fragrance, Perceive, in 1999.
"Uniting the art of perfumery with modern science, Avon researchers have created a new, mood enhancing complex using synthesized human pheromones. Pheromones are chemicals created by the body that send signals to the brain through the olfactory senses. The result is a perfume, Perceive, with the power to elevate someone's mood. The first of its kind, other fragrances have used animal pheromones, which are not proven to have an effect on humans. The pheromones synthesized for Perceive are designed to make the wearer feel more positive, confident, centered and happy," Avon claims.
They also declare that the "exclusive Mood Enhancing Complex unites elements that appeal to all five senses while heightening emotional confidence, comfort and intuition: Pear and Damascus appeal to taste. Cedar wood, sandalwood and musk appeal to touch. Crackling peppercorn and sparkling citrus communicate the sense of sound. A single orchid opens the sense of sight. Freesia, gardenia and dianthus heighten the sense of smell."
